FMC Announces First and Only Cross-Spectrum Herbicide in Sunflowers

PHILADELPHIA – March 16, 2012 – BroadAxe TM herbicide, a new, powerful tool in the fight against weeds has just received EPA registration, according to FMC Agricultural Products Group. Used in no-till and conventional till sunflower fields, BroadAxe provides growers with preemergence control of grass and broadleaf weeds without the need for tank mixing.

“We are pleased to offer sunflower growers another tool for their weed management program,” FMC Product Manager Bob Leifker said. “BroadAxe is a great fit where growers are experiencing higher weed pressures or have needed to tank mix with other preemergence grass herbicides.”
Handling both broadleaves and grasses, its binary-technology formulation provides preemergence weed control before planting and keeps them away while crops grow. BroadAxe herbicide provides unsurpassed control of pigweeds and kochia as well as green and yellow foxtail, barnyardgrass, Russian thistle and common lambsquarters.

During a two-year period, FMC conducted research trials in the heart of sunflower growing areas. These trials compared BroadAxe herbicide to other conventional herbicides. The results showed that BroadAxe had better control on kochia, green foxtail, redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, Russian thistle and barnyardgrass.

“When we walked through the research plots, BroadAxe always stood out as the best treatment in the plot,” FMC Technical Sales Manager Sam Lockhart said. “It provides reliable, consistent control of kochia and Russian thistle and has been proven effective on grasses, specifically green and yellow foxtail and barnyardgrass.”

The application for BroadAxe herbicide begins early preplant up to 14 days prior to planting to preemergence up to three days after planting. It provides a lower use rate compared to traditional grass pre herbicides. BroadAxe also has an additional label for field peas.
