FMC Introduces Hero EW insecticide for Key Fruit, Vegetable and Row Crop Markets

Mar 09, 2009 California Approves Product for Control of Key Insects

Philadelphia, February 4, 2008 — Insect control in fruit and vegetable crops in California, and throughout the U.S., just got easier with the most recent label expansion from FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC). Hero® EW insecticide has received both an expanded label from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and approval from the State of California for product use in a variety of fruit and vegetable crops to control a wide range of insects.

Hero was initially approved in 2007 for use in corn to control a broad spectrum of insects, including bean leaf beetle, common stalk borer, Western bean cutworm, Japanese beetles and a wide variety of other mid- to late-season pests.

Additional uses for Hero EW include insect protection in the fruit and vegetable markets, such as eggplant, peppers (bell and non-bell), tomatoes, head lettuce, head and stem brassica, corn and cotton.

The unique dual-action technology of Hero provides faster knockdown and longer-lasting residual control, allowing growers to control a broad spectrum of pests.

“Hero EW is unparalleled in providing complete, economical fruit and vegetable insect control,” says Houston Joost, insecticide product development manager at FMC Corporation. “The state-of-the-art pyrethroid technology of Hero makes it an excellent value and allows growers in the fruit and vegetable markets to maximize the quality of their crops and boost overall yields each year.”

Hero® EW provides superior knockdown of mites, lepidoptera, worms and a wide variety of other insect pests in eggplant, peppers and tomatoes. When applied on head lettuce, brassicas and succulent peas and beans, Hero stops larval insect feeding before damage (and often consequent disease) decreases overall yields and profits. Other key insects controlled by Hero EW include thrips, cutworms, armyworms, leafhoppers, loopers and other pests. Figure 1 shows a summary of the mean percent of insect control Hero provided in a variety of field trials in 2006. As this chart reveals, Hero provides effective insect control against a wide variety of insect pests.

Hero EW holds a “Caution” signal word and has a 12-hour re-entry interval (REI). Hero can be used via a foliar application or through chemigation at rates ranging from 2.8 oz/A to 11.2 oz/A, depending on pest pressure and crop segment. For maximum control of pests, Hero can be applied as a tank mix with other insecticides and with fungicides as part of an overall plant health program for fruit and vegetable crop segments.
