Stewardship

Aim™ EC provides solid control of tough broadleaves, and can be a powerful aid in harvesting high-quality cotton. It's been labeled as "reduced risk" by the EPA for most cereal grain crops, and as an "OrganoPhosphate (OP) Alternative" for cotton.

But these benefits don't come without responsibility. In addition to the label requirements, there are a few key management practices to keep in mind when you use Aim.

As a post-directed herbicide:

  1. Avoid spraying cotton plants.
Follow the label's guidelines to determine the right type of application, based on the maturity of your cotton. Using the correct application equipment will prevent contact of spray solution with the cotton foliage and green stem tissue.
  2. Determine the proper use rates.
Aim EC herbicide should be applied at rates between ¾ and 1 ½ fluid ounces per acre, depending upon the weeds to be controlled. Consult the label to determine the proper use rates for your specific weed pressures.
  3. Carefully observe drift management guidelines.
When spraying near cotton, drift management is essential. Do not apply when conditions favoring drift exist or wind is above 10 mph.
  4. Practice good product management.
Do not apply more than a total of 3 ¼ fluid ounces per acre per season, including post-directed and layby applications. Corn, rice and soybeans may be planted at any time following an application of Aim EC. Follow rotation guidelines on the label for other crops.

As a harvest aid:

  1. Time your application carefully.
Apply Aim EC with conventional ground sprayers or by aerial application. Make applications when 60 to 70 percent of the bolls are open, or according to extension service recommendations in the use area. Defoliating too early can reduce yield and fiber quality, while defoliating too late increases losses due to damaged lint or boll rot.
  2. Achieve full coverage.
Coverage is essential for complete defoliation. Apply as a broadcast spray at a rate of 2/3 ounce per acre in spray volume sufficient to provide complete coverage of cotton foliage. Use a minimum of 10 gallons of finished spray per acre for ground application and 5 gallons per acre for aerial application. Use crop oil concentrate (COC) at 1.0% v/v (1 gallon per 100 gallons of spray solution).
  3. Consider additional factors.
Dense cotton canopy, large plant size or unfavorable environmental conditions may reduce the efficacy of your initial application and increase the need for a second one. If necessary, this repeat application will remove any remaining foliage and control regrowth.
  4. Observe drift management guidelines.
Careful drift management is essential. Correct pressure settings, proper nozzle size and alignment, and attention to wind speeds will ensure on-target application. Follow Spray Drift Management and General Information guidelines on the label.
  5. Practice good product management.
Do not apply more than a total of 2.0 ounces per acre of Aim EC as a harvest aid. Aim is rainfast within one hour after application and may be applied up to 7 days of harvest. Corn, rice and soybeans may be planted at any time following an application of Aim EC. Follow rotation guidelines on the label for other crops.
