Cupgrasses

Common: Southwestern Cupgrasses, Woolly cupgrasses

Scientific: Eriochloa gracilis, Eriochloa villosa

Affected Crops: Corn, soybeans.

Identification:
  • Southwestern - Seedlings look similar to large Crabgrass but are lighter green and there is an absence of hairs. The leaves are smooth.
  • Woolly - The erect annual grows to a height of 3 feet. It reproduces by seed and by prostrate stems that root at the nodes. Seedling is very thin and covered with hairs. Leaves are 3/4 - 5 1/4 in. long and hairy on both surfaces. There is a distinct ring below the spikelet.

Geographical Distribution: Southwestern cupgrass is found in this region of the United States. Woolly cupgrass is found in the Mid-West and far West.
