Common: Common Cocklebur

Scientific:  Xanthium strumarium

Affected Crops: Corn, cotton, rice, sorghum, soybeans, tobacco.

Identification: Cotyledons are long and waxy, as well as narrow and tapering at each end. There are dark maroon stem lesions. Adult leaves are alternate and rough. Burs are up to one inch long with hooked prickles.

Geographical Distribution: An established weed throughout much of the United States. It is common in cultivated fields and waste areas.
