Postemergence Herbicides Fight Weed Escapes After Late Planting FMC Offers MarvelTM Herbicide for Soybean Growers

5/28/2013

PHILADELPHIA – May 28, 2013 – With only two percent of soybeans planted in early May, growers are preparing for weed escapes throughout the late spring and early summer months. MarvelTM herbicide, from FMC Agricultural Products, offers a postemergence herbicide solution, providing growers with a more aggressive tank-mix partner for maximum control of glyphosate-resistant weeds.

“Preemergence applications that growers had put down earlier in the season might not be as effective because growers were unable to get their fields planted right away,” said Brent Neuberger, FMC Agricultural Products North America senior technical service manager. “Weed resistance is already a major issue in soybean fields, but with the proper use of a postemergence herbicide, growers can protect their yields.”

Postemergence weed control in soybeans is becoming more of a challenge because of glyphosate resistance. Increasing herbicide diversity, including multiple modes of action, with postemergence herbicide applications will increase weed spectrum and preserve the effectiveness of current herbicide trait technologies. PPO (protoporphyrinogen oxidase) herbicides, such as Marvel, when added with postemergence glyphosate or glufosinate applications, will diversify chemistry in addition to weed spectrum. Foliar coverage is critical for maximizing PPO herbicide effectiveness.

“Weeds should be targeted when they are four inches or smaller,” said Neuberger. “Be sure to scout your fields to stay ahead of pest outbreaks.”

Marvel herbicide targets waterhemp, palmer pigweed, lambsquarters and other key weeds with broad-spectrum control. Visual control symptoms can be seen in as quickly as 24 hours. Marvel also delivers the speed, flexibility, low risk of carryover and low use rate that make it a superior option for postemergence control.
